Projectomschrijving

To extend the museum Hof Van Busleyden located in a neighborhood of important cultural monuments, a visible augmentation and invisible architectural interface was created. The classified Renaissance palace made of brick and sandstone wraps around three outdoor spaces that were once completely sealed off from the public. The challenge in expanding the museum was to improve accessibility and flexibility while adding capacity, with as little interference as possible on the environment. As a result, the new museum halls nestle unseen nine meters under the outdoor gardens and the carillon museum. This technical feat of underground construction created one small and one large exhibition space for which a “certificaat museumklasse A conditionering A” was awarded – unique in Belgium. The impressive 750m² large exhibition hall, with a free span of 30 m and a height of 6.5 m, has the infrastructure to display international masterpieces.
